Ford's Latest: Beasley on the Block, Grizzlies in the Lead

ESPN.com's Chad Ford is working late tonight. Ford just posted an updated story on the site that says the following:

1. The Heat are considering taking O.J. Mayo or even Jerryd Bayless at #2.

2. The Heat will not draft and keep Michael Beasley.

3. If the Heat draft and trade Beasley (the most likely scenario), the Grizzlies are the team most likely to pull off a deal.

Ford's take on the Grizzlies appeal:

Quote:
The Grizzlies have a huge hole at the power forward position (since trading away Pau Gasol) and see Beasley as an elite talent to pair up with Rudy Gay.

The Grizzlies can offer a number of deals that could entice Miami. They could include the No. 5 pick, Mike Miller and the Heat's choice of either Kyle Lowry or Mike Conley. Adding Miller and a point guard would allow the Heat to be very flexible on who they draft at No. 5. They could add another guard like Bayless or they could go big with a player like Brook Lopez or Kevin Love.

I just can't understand why all the sudden Conley is so great! He wasn't even in the top 10 rookies of the past year! And it would be super stupid to nix the Beasley deal because of Conley. Lowry is just as good and is a better defender. If the Grizz decline the trade because of that then they deserve to have a mediocre team for the next decade. When will they have another chance to get a franchise player like Beasley?? With the luck they have in the draft, never. This is their best opportunity to finally have a really good team. I just can't see why people would want to pass on Beasley for Conley! Which lineup would you prefer:
PG Lowry
SG Critt
SF Gay
PF Beasley
C Darko
or:
PG Conley
SG Miller
SF Gay
PF Love/Hakim
C Darko

Okay people with the exception of Love, that is the same lineup they had last year that they won 23 games. Kevin Love is not going to make that much difference!
I know that we would prefer that Conley stayed but if that means giving up Beasley so Conley would stay than that is just insane!!!!!

Come on Grizzlies, go get Beasley. I just hope they don't give up Conley and the 5th. Either Conley or the 5th is fine, but just don't give up both.

might as well kiss the dream of beasley good bye.

no way miami trades with us unless Mayo is still there at 5, which he won't be.

we are back to square one.

to get beasley, we have to go through the twloves, meaning shipping assets to them and miami, which will likely end up costing us more than just agreeing to give up conley.

Tillery is reporting that Mike Conley won't be traded. The Grizzlies have taken him out of trade talks. If they can still get the 2nd pick and keep Conley, then I will be the first person to cheer. But if this move makes them miss out on Beasley...

For the record, I like Conley. I think he could turn into a solid PG. Not a great PG, but solid. However, take a look at Hollinger's rankings on ESPN.com. Based on his criteria, Beasley is by far and away the highest ranked player in this draft.

Conley will most likely never be an All-Star. Sorry, but he has shown nothing to make me think he is a Tony Parker/Jason Kidd/Steve Nash level PG, or ever will be. But Beasley looks to be an almost certain All-Star.

The low-end of predictions being made about Beasley has him being a 20 and 10 guy. The high-end? He could be a superstar. Anyone think Conley will someday be an NBA superstar? Yeah, not so much.

A team like the Grizzlies gets very few opportunities to grab a guy with the kind of "off the charts" potential that Beasley has. If they blow this chance, Grizzlies fans (what few are left) will remember this as the moment everything could have turned around. They will watch every highlight clip of Beasley playing for another team, and feel sick inside.

Here's hoping that the Griz manage to nab Beasley without giving up Conley. But, putting a lot of faith in their management skills is kind of hard these days.

I agree - we shouldn't give Conley up unless the return value is more than just Beasley.

Dream scenario:

1) Miller, Lowry, #28 to Miami for #2 (Beasley), Banks, Blount

2) Rights to M.Gasol and #5 to Minnesota for #3 (Mayo) and filler (we can take more back since we're under the cap)

Lineup Result:

Conley/Banks
Mayo/Crittendon
Gay/FA (Pietrus) or Minny filler
Beasley/Warrick/Cardinal
Darko/Blount/Collins

We can dream, can't we? Maybe Miami really values Miller and needs to dump salary....maybe Minnesota really values Gasol and wants a big anyway....
