The Draft Post

A little late getting started. If anybody is alive out there, holla back.

Quick hits:

Heard from a Griz insider this afternoon that all the talk at headquarters was that Miami and Minnesota would make a simple trade involving Beasley and Mayo.

Griz war room draft board: 1. Rose 2. Beasley 3. Mayo 4. Lopez 5. Love.

But, don't think that means the Grizzlies would take Lopez over Love if available. Lopez is primarily a center, and that spot's covered with Darko and Gasol.

There's some talk of a Conley to Portland for Outlaw and #13 deal. Can't imagine that would really happen.

And the pick is:

Verno: Come off the ledge! It's okay!

Brook Lopez: You just fell to #10. Stop crying!

Up next: CDR's painful descent to the second round.

UPDATE: I'm hearing Donte Greene might be on the move, maybe with Darrell Arthur ending up in Memphis.

I liked the Greene pick, if he is kept.

Also -- there could be issues with the Love pick.

UPDATE:

On Greene - the Portland-Houston deal makes me think Greene could be staying. I'd heard there was a deal in the works involving Portland and Houston, but that it had Arthur ending up in Memphis somehow. Possible miscommunication.

On Love: Essentially I heard there wasn't much consensus on the pick and there also wasn't the expected communication between the team and Love after the pick. Not sure if that communication has occured yet.

ESPN reports Love, Miller, Cardnal, and Collins to Wolves for Mayo, Jaric, Walker, and Buckner

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:46am

Love, Miller, Cardinal, Collins

for

Mayo, Jaric, Buckner, Antoine Walker

Could this be a pre-cursor to getting Beasley???

Jeff (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:46am

Memphis just trade Love, Miller, Cardinal and Collins to Minnesota for Mayo, Jaric, Walker and Buckner.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:45am

Here is what the Grizz current roster would look like:

Conley/Lowry/Critt
Miller
Gay
Love/Arthur/Warrick/Cardinal
MGasol/Milicic/Collins

Will we hear about any more trades tonight?

Jeff (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:34am

Is there any reason to believe that a trade for Mayo is in the works to beef up a deal for Beasley almost like the three team deal you suggested?

cameron438 (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:29am

ESPN came back on and clarified that it was clarified that it was a rumor, and NO KIDNEY PROBLEM.

That rumor probably cost him 10 spots in the draft.

Jeff (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:27am

I suspect adding Arthur could lead to some other roster move related to the now-crowded frontcourt, but I'm not going speculate yet on what that might be.

I've been getting ahead of myself a little too much tonight. My info on Arthur and Greene looks like it was accurate, though.

Chris Herrington | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:26am

So the Grizzlies throw away a pick this year and a second-rounder next year for a guy with a kidney problem who plummeted in the draft and becomes the 4th player at his position? What a joke.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:24am

Chris, are you hearing anything about a deal of Love for Mayo (with others involved)? This may explain the lack of phone call to Love...

RLD (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:24am

This would be awesome. If we get Arthur we can trade Love and someone like Marc Gasol to the Timberwolves for OJ Mayo. That would be an amazing draft if we got Mayo and Arthur without giving up Miller or Lowry. I am probably just dreaming though- it's too easy.

tommyh (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:23am

I'd heard just after the picks that something was in the works with Greene going out and Darrell Arthur coming in.

Just talked to Chris Vernon and he's now hearing that the Grizzlies end of the deal is Greene and a future second-rounder for Arthur. May be three teams involved (Blazers, Rockets) and other players, but that's the Grizzlies portion of the deal.

The would give the Grizzlies a bit of a logjam at the 4 with Love, Arthur, Warrick. It will interesting to see how that shakes out.

I don't understand what the hell is going on here ...

Is this true about Greene being gone and it doesn't say what the hell we get ....

Boo (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:12am

Chris, do you know anything or can you find out anything about what the Chronicle is reporting?

A three way deal with Memphis, Portland, and Houston involving Green, Dorsey, and Batum?

I am very confused at this point anything you can find out would be helpful.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:09am

Greene isn't like Warrick. He is a SF that likes to shoot too many 3's. That is nothing like Warrick. Just because they went to Syracuse doesn't mean they are a like. He is extremely athletic and can light it up from deep which is what we need but he does have some attitude problems and is selfish. Good pick though. An upside type of pick.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:07am

houston chronicle is reporting the 3 way that herrington and verno both thought would happen....

i thought greene was a good value pick...but maybe arthur is too

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 4:06am

The Greene pick has grown on me as he appears to be a perfect late 1st round pick - unrealized upside and only 20 years old - with Conley (19), Love (19), Crittendon (19), Gay (21), Lowry (22) Gasol (23), Darko (23) - that's decent youth.

RLD (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:58am

Why in the hell have the Grizzlies not communicated with Kevin Love to this point?

Did an expected deal fall through? Do they just not care?

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:55am

As a Grizzlies fan in Texas who has subscribed to NBA League Pass for the last three seasons, I have to say I'm cancelling my subscription if the Grizzlies keep Donte Greene. There is absolutely no way Greene fits into the Grizzlies scheme, particularly when they already have Warrick. After being thrilled by their selection of Love, I am absolutely flabbergasted by such a senseless pick.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:54am

No sure why all the complaining. I wanted Love with the 5th pick and then Greene is the high risk/high reward pick so many wanted. He was projected much higher so we might have gotten a steal. Why do people automatically compare Greene to Warrick just because they went to the same school?? Have you never seen Greene play?? Totally different player!

RJ (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:53am

This is just STUPID ... We are doing nothing and we get just Greene and Love .... AWESOME !!

I seriously becoming less of a Grizzlies fan ...

Boo (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:43am

Some of us appreciate you sharing what your hearing. We all know that no trade is done until it is submitted to the league.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:41am

You're going 0-fer on your predictions and rumors.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:36am

Any chance the Grizz make a deal for CDR?

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:34am

so we done for the night?

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:29am

Ahhhh... is poor wittle Heisley on the warpath???

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:29am

I bet half the room wanted Eric Gordon, and the other half wanted Love. I like Gordon a lot more. But I think we should trade Love and Marc Gasol to Minnesota for Mayo. That would be sooo sweet, so we won't do it.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:29am

It still doesn't make sense why the Grizzlies don't try to get those 2 from Portland ....

This is why Memphis is losing fans and Wallace/Heisley suck ARSE !!

Boo (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:27am

I probably shouldn't have alluded to anything about Love since I'm not comfortable going into detail right now -- and it may well not turn into a problem.

I should clarify that what I'm hearing on the Love pick has more to do with internal stuff with the Grizzlies -- nothing to do with problems coming from the Love end.

Chris Herrington | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:25am

Portland doesn't have enough empty roster spots to keep all the players they will draft; that is why they are trading two players for a foreigner they can stash overseas for a few years.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:22am

I don't get it ... Why aren't the Grizzlies making moves to get anyone else !!!

What's this Love issue ?

Houston would be getting 2 steals from Portland for Nothing !

Booo (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:20am

Dorsey vs. Yao?

Sign me up for tickets to Rockets practice.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:20am

Word is Darrell Arthur and Dorsey are headed to Houston in exchange for Nicolas Batum.

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:18am

What issues pray tell?

GrizzledGrizzFan (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:17am

The idea of Dorsey and Oden going at each other in practice everyday is hilarious.

But -- Dorsey doesn't fit the profile in Portland and they don't have roster spots. I'll be surprised if he's wearing a Blazers uniform next season.

Chris Herrington | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:15am

I doubt it's a big deal and haven't heard anything that would suggest a trade.

But apparently there was some weirdness, maybe from a lack of consensus on the pick. I'll try to elaborate if I can.

Chris Herrington | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:13am

Please tell me that all of this reading and listening to radio about the Draft is not going to just end with Love and Greene.

Please. Because you know we won't spend our cap space.

Steve (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:10am

Joey Dorsey's now on the same team as Greg Oden. Funny.

Greg Akers (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 3:07am

At least give us a team they are having discussions with!

Passenger on the LOVE TRAIN (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:56am

all we get is "issues with the Love pick"? COME ON HERRINGTON BE MORE SPECIFIC!

Love Train Passenger (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:55am

Please tell me the only way Love is going anywhere is if Beasley is coming to town!!!

Passenger on the LOVE TRAIN (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:49am

What are the issues with Love?

cameron438 (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:45am

I hope to heck they do move him.

Wasted pick - Hakim Warrick 2.0. Tweener that plays the same position that our current best player plays. Played his college ball at Princeton err the 'Cuse.

Ironical.

Bill Walker
JR Giddens
CDR
Nathan Jawai
DJ White
Jamont Gordon
DeAndre Jordan

Hell, Joey Dorsey

All players that would have served the Grizz much, much better than the wasted pick.

GrizzledGrizzFAn (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:42am

I'm hearing Greene is being moved (to Houston or Portland) and that Darrell Arthur is ending up in Memphis.

Sketchy reports so far, but something seems to be going on.

Chris Herrington | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:36am

The question of the night: What hat will Greene be wearing at the end of the night?

Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:30am

Do you anticipate any moves by the team tonight now that round 1 is done. Overall not a bad night. Obviously better things could have happened, but standing pat and getting Love and Greene not too bad.

BT (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:28am

I doubt it.

Chris Herrington | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 1:54am

Okay...

Any chance the Grizz 'buy' the 26th or a couple of 2nd rd picks.

My board
1.Arthur
2.CDR
3.Jordan
4.Giddens

Passenger on the LOVE TRAIN (not verified) | Fri, 06/27/2008 - 1:51am

My Top 5 for the #28 still left:

1. Lee
2. Arthur
3. Koufos
4. Greene
5. Jordan
