Smith update

The Atlanta Journal Constitution's Sekou Smith has a piece up now about the Josh Smith offer sheet that pushes the story along a little bit, filling in two elements that were unclear from the Commercial Appeal story.

The AJC reports that the offer sheet has indeed been signed and that the $58 million dollar offer covers five years.

With Smith signing the offer sheet, the seven-day clock for the Hawks to match is set in motion.

At this point there seem to be three potential outcomes:

1. The Hawks can match the Grizzlies offer and retain Smith for the $58 million number. This is significantly more than the five-year, $45 million offer the Hawks had previously made to Smith, but is still well in line with his market value. I don't think anyone would be surprised to see Atlanta match this offer.

2. The Hawks could decline to match the offer and allow Smith to sign with the Grizzlies for that amount. I find this outcome unlikely, but given the disarray in Atlanta, it is at least possible.

3. The Grizzlies could rescind the offer (on the agreement of all three parties) and enter into sign-and-trade negotiations with the Hawks, something that would probably make a lot of sense for both teams.

Whichever way this goes, don't expect anything to be resolved until next week.

I much prefer the indepth quality reporting on BTA as well but there is something out there that can be reported on. All the rumblings about Zach Randolph, the Iranian player, other possible trades. CW plays very close to the vest but any news would be good. Like I said previously, even a no news out of the Grizz camp this week lets us know that someone is at least awake and watching. What is OJ up to preparing for the season? Conley? Rudy? How is Darko's injury healing? It doens't have to be much but something maybe every week or so would be good. As it stands it is approaching a month. Come on Chris, drop some tidbits on us:-)

There isn't any news out there to share! I would rather you not update than put the useless posts that 3SOB has been putting up there lately.

Sorry for the spelling it should have said "NO news on the Grizzly front this week".

While not as vocal as the previous posters I too feel like I am out in the cheap seats trying to get any kind of Grizzly news. I have gotten to the point of checking 3SOB more than this site because he does up date regular basis. I wouldn't even care if it was a quick blurb or "now news on the Grizzly front this week" kind of thing. Chris, I know you have other responsibilities other than just this blog but you have come to represent the mecca of Grizzly news in Memphis and we need our news.

I second that emotion. This blog does suck! It is unfortunate that the Grizzlies reporters are as apathetic about reporting the news as the front office is about making some news. Fucking lame!!!!!

"The Hawks matched the offer. See you next year Carlos Boozer."

The only time you'll see Boozer in Memphis in 2009-2010 is when the Heat visit the Forum.

Why didn't they make this offer before Childress signed overseas? That way Atlanta would've been worrying about paying two large salaries and may have been more inclined to sign and trade or just not match. And the offer was a straight-up deal? Not front-loaded or with any other hurdles? And now they're talking about Zach Randolph? Gentlemen, I think we, the fans, have just been played big time...

Are you sure #3 can really happen. I have seen it posted by Sekou Smith of ajc.com that once Smith signs the offer sheet there is no possibility of a sign and trade under league rules . Its either keep him or not.

I doubt very seriously that the Hawks and Grizzlies haven't agreed on what happens next. Surely the Griz made this offer after conferring with the Hawks about a trade. They would not have made this offer if they knew the Hawks would just match and that is that. Why go through the motions if there wasn't already a deal worked out? Smith wants out of Atlanta and next year he walks away for nothing.
Hawks want Horford as their starting PF.

If Darko wasn't included in the trade and the Grizzlies therefore needed to even out the salaries, they could probably throw Antoine Walker in there too, right?

The Grizz come out ahead in any of those 3 scenarios: 1) They sign Smith for $58 million and get a great, young power forward 2) They lose him but get credit for making the move 3) They do a sign and trade with some combination of Darko, Hakim, Lowry or Crittenton--all players we can live without. I find it hard to believe that the offer is just a straight forward deal that is sure to be matched. Either it is front-loaded beyond the Hawks' ability to pay, or it was delivered when the majority of Hawks' owners are on vacation around the globe, etc. Heisley is pretty savvy about spending his money, or even offering the opportunity to spend his money. I hope you can sniff out the details of the offer and post it on your blog.
